The Bronx Charter School for Excellence (BCSE), also known as Bronx Excellence, was established in 2004, in the Parkchester neighborhood of the Bronx, NY. Bronx Excellence is a 2012 National Blue Ribbon Schools Award honoree – the U.S. Department of Education's highest honor for schools across the country. Bronx Excellence was renamed Bronx Excellence 1 and Middle in 2016 when the Excellence Community Schools family opened Bronx Excellence 2 in Morris Park, and Bronx Excellence 3 in Wakefield in 2017. These replica sibling schools are based on the Blue Ribbon model of the original Bronx Excellence and will grow one grade level per year until they too become full service K-8 academies. Currently, the Excellence Network serves over 1,400 scholars including the affiliate school, Stamford Excellence in lower Connecticut.
BCSE is currently one of the most competitive charter schools in the 5 boroughs, with an acceptance rate of 8% of applicants. Once in the Bronx Excellence system scholars of all ages may also embark on extracurricular and enrichment courses on both the elementary and middle school levels which include:
- Charter School Athletics Association
- Glee Club
- Intermural Sports
- Language Arts
- Martial Arts
- Music Theory
- Sensory Arts
- Student Council
In additional to a full, NYS-approved Common Core curriculum and two hours of reading and math and therapy/services as needed. Bronx Excellence 1 and Middle are both a SUNY Education Department Reward School as well as a Substantial Progress School in Good Standing.
