About Us

The Bronx Charter School for Excellence (BCSE), also known as Bronx Excellence, was established in 2004, in the Parkchester neighborhood of the Bronx, NY. Bronx Excellence is a 2012 National Blue Ribbon School Award honoree – the U.S. Department of Education's highest honor for schools across the country. Bronx Excellence was renamed Bronx Excellence 1 Elementary and Bronx Excellence 1 Middle in 2015 when Excellence Community Schools, Bronx Excellence 1's charter management (or parent) organization, opened the Connecticut affiliate school Stamford Excellence, subsequently Bronx Excellence 2 in Morris Park, Bronx Excellence 3, Bronx Excellence 4 in Wakefield, and Bronx Excellence 5. These sibling schools are based on the K-8 Blue Ribbon model of the original Bronx Excellence and will grow one grade level per year until they too become full service K-8 academies. Currently, the Excellence Network serves over 1,400 scholars. Excellence schools are special because they are based on academic, ethical and cultural standards written into every charter:

  • Behavioral Code of Conduct
  • Blind Lottery Admissions
  • Free, Public Charter School
  • High School Placement
  • Hiring within the Borough/City
  • Longer School Day
  • Mandatory Uniforms
  • Open Enrollment
  • Saturday Academy Test Prep
  • Summer Enrichment

Bronx Excellence 1 is a SUNY Education Department Reward School as well as a Substantial Progress School in Good Standing. Bronx Excellence 1 is currently one of the most competitive charter schools in the 5 boroughs, with an acceptance rate of 8% of applicants. Once in the Bronx Excellence system scholars of all ages may also embark on extracurricular and enrichment courses on both the elementary and middle school levels which include Charter School Athletics Association, Glee Club, Intermural Sports, Language Arts, Martial Arts, Music Theory, Robotics, Sensory Arts and Student Council.
