Chancellor Carranza visits Bronx Excellence 1 and Middle
Richard Carranza, the New York City Schools Chancellor, visited three major charter schools including the Bronx Charter School for Excellence 1, to garner best practices of the public charter school system as well open conversations about the methodologies of charters around the city. Thoroughly exploring the adjoining Benedict Avenue campus, Mr. Carranza's vision of education includes transparency, desegregation and equitable access to schools that will fully prepare all students for the colleges and careers of their choice.

Dr. Charlene Reid – 2017 Keepers of the Dream Honoree
In April of each year, the National Action Network (NAN) commemorates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy with its annual “Keepers of the Dream Awards” gala. During this event, NAN honors individuals and corporations who continue to uphold the principles for which Dr. King advocated throughout his life’s work. The event is attended by esteemed guests, speakers, presenters, entertainers, and honorees, which have historically included former President Barack Obama, former US Attorney General Eric Holder, Jr., Denzel Washington, Cicely Tyson, Myrlie Evers-Williams, and Russell Simmons. This year was no exception.
Dr. Charlene Reid, CEO of Excellence Community Schools, was a proud recipient of the 2017 Keepers of the Dream Education Award. The honor was presented to her by Mr. Phil Griffin, President of MSNBC, and Mrs. Kory Apton-Griffin, Board Member for Excellence Community Schools. The evening was hosted by Samuel L. Jackson, with speakers and guests that included Governor Cuomo, Rev. Dr. W. Franklin Richardson, actress LaTanya Richardson, Reverend Jessie Jackson, Dr. King’s son, Martin Luther King, III, and of course NAN President and Founder, the Reverend Al Sharpton. Dr. Reid’s fellow honorees included: Rabbi Abraham Heschel (posthumously), Humanitarian Award; Mr. Harry Belafonte, Chairman’s Award; Mrs. Cynthia Marshall, Corporate Executive Award; Rev. Dr. William Barber II, Rev. Dr. Wyatt Tee Walker Social Justice Award; Jorge Ramos, Media Award; Panasonic Corporation North America, Corporate Award; Terry O’Neill, President’s Award; and, Rev. Dr. Steffie Bartley, Michael A. Hardy, Esq. Award for National Action Network Service.
